Don't have the VIN? Search by year, make and model
Checking official NHTSA sources…
Check if YOUR car has been repaired (free, on NHTSA)
Opens the official NHTSA page with your VIN filled in.
What this free check DOESN'T tell you
- Reported accidents and damage. Recalls don't show whether the car was in a crash.
- Salvage, rebuilt or flood title. A branded title cuts the value a lot and can hide serious damage.
- Odometer rollback. You need to compare mileage readings over time.
- Number of owners. How many times it was sold and in which states it was registered.
- Taxi, rental or fleet use. These cars usually have much more wear.
For this you need a (paid) vehicle history report.
We may earn a commission if you buy through these links, at no extra cost to you.

Questions to ask the seller
- Is the title in your name? Is it "clean" or does it have a brand (salvage, rebuilt, flood)?
- Has it been in any accident? Was it repaired at a shop? Do you have the paperwork?
- Were the recalls done? Do you have the dealer receipt?
- How many owners has it had? Did you use it for Uber, taxi or delivery?
- Do you have maintenance records (oil, brakes, timing belt)?
- Is any warning light on in the dashboard?
- Can I take it to a mechanic I trust for an inspection before buying?
- Does the VIN on the dashboard match the one on the door and on the title?
- Is there an outstanding loan (lien) or is it fully paid off?
